Nammu

Nammu
   An early Sumerian mother goddess pictured as both a deity of freshwater and a creator goddess. In Sumerian creation stories Nammu (or Namma) supposedly was self-creating (i.e., she sprung into being on her own) and somehow brought about the existence of all things, including the other gods. Various versions and images of Nammu evolved over time, and other goddesses were either associated with her or replaced her in various religious narratives. For example, in the Babylonian creation epic, the Enuma Elish, her role is assumed by the goddess Tiamat, who unleashes monsters on the other gods and is defeated by the god Marduk.
